Today's FX market split 'Asia' from 'Europe.' The RMB firmed to 6.6704 against the dollar and the won strengthened to 1,323.2; on the other side the euro weakened to 7.469 versus RMB and 1.1202 versus USD, across the board. The same dollar-priced Brent converts cheaper into RMB or won than into euro.
For refiners, that restores Asian buyers' relative cost advantage on dollar crude. Northeast Asian refiners (China, Korea) land the barrel cheaper in local currency than their European peers, and the bidding for traditionally Asia-premium cargoes like ESPO and Lula tilts toward China, Japan and Korea.
But do not read this as a one-way gift. A stronger won pressures Korean product exporters' dollar quotes, and the yen is still soft near 156.86, so Asia's internal cost structure is not moving in lockstep. The real beneficiary is the Chinese independent refiner that settles in RMB and can access short-haul light sweet grades.
