Germany 1529 vs UK 666 kb/d: EU Crude Import Scale Gap
Germany imported 1,529 kb/d of crude in Aug 2026 — 2.3× UK’s 666 kb/d; Italy’s refinery input (1,379 kb/d) exceeded its imports (1,225 kb/d); Netherlands’ crude inventory stood at 33,357 kb — just 27% of the average of Germany, France, Spain and Italy. Mandeb Strait AIS visibility: 13 vessels/day (vs. 17 normal); Bosporus: 16 vs. 24 — both reflect signal coverage, not trade collapse.

Germany imported 1,529 kb/d of crude oil in August 2026 — highest among the seven EU countries — 2.3× UK’s 666 kb/d and 1.39× Netherlands’ 1,100 kb/d. This scale reflects its logistical centrality: Rotterdam–Rhine inland waterway system absorbs cargoes from North Sea and Mediterranean sources. UK’s domestic output (392 kb/d) covers 43% of its refinery input (906 kb/d), making it least import-dependent. Italy is the only country where refinery input (1,379 kb/d) exceeded imports (1,225 kb/d) by 154 kb/d — implying drawdowns or lagged arrivals. Spain imported 1,356 kb/d and processed 1,296 kb/d, holding 34,108 kb of crude inventory — 72% of the average of Germany, France and Italy — signaling balanced import-refining cadence. France imported 1,013 kb/d, processed 991 kb/d, and held 45,679 kb — the highest crude inventory among the seven, though days-of-cover is undisclosed. Norway imported just 44 kb/d, as its domestic production (1,895 kb/d) is overwhelmingly export-oriented. Turkey imported 676 kb/d but processed 889 kb/d — the gap covered by inventory or Black Sea transshipment. On refined products: Germany holds 72,108 kb of diesel — 60% of its total refined inventory (120,466 kb) — reinforcing its role as Europe’s diesel pricing hub. Netherlands holds 13,003 kb of fuel oil — 3.7× Germany’s 3,554 kb — consistent with Rotterdam’s fuel oil bunkering and distribution function. Regarding chokepoints: Mandeb Strait AIS visibility is 13 vessels/day (30-day avg: 9.43; normal: 17); Bosporus is 16 (avg: 14.03; normal: 24). But JODI data shows no import collapse — all nations reported August volumes within historical norms — confirming these are AIS signal fluctuations, not trade disruption. For SNSUC’s European clients: Germany’s high import volume + high diesel stock = weaker near-term landed pricing power; Netherlands’ low crude stock + high fuel oil stock = narrowing fuel oil arbitrage window; Spain’s import-to-processing ratio (1.05) offers stronger spot replenishment flexibility than France (1.02) or Italy (0.89). Bearish on short-term EU crude import premium. Trigger: Brent < $108 AND German imports fall below 1,450 kb/d for two consecutive months.
