The Shanghai spot board sent a clear spread signal today: natural rubber (SCRWF) settled at 19,260 CNY/t, up just 0.42% on the day, while butadiene rubber (BR9000) climbed to 17,155 CNY/t, gaining 1.15%. The two moved the same direction but at different speeds, compressing the NR-BR spread to 2,105 CNY/t — well below the 4,000 CNY/t area seen in early October.
The narrowing spread shifts the cost balance in tire compounds. Natural rubber carries the heavier weight in formulations; when it sticks near the highs, producers look to butadiene as a substitute. But butadiene caught up today, closing the substitution window instead. Traders sitting on bonded natural-rubber warehouse receipts are better off holding the stock than chasing butadiene higher.
The two lines trace different supply stories: natural rubber rests on Southeast Asian monsoon harvesting and domestic destocking, giving it a hard floor, while butadiene tracks butadiene-unit maintenance and restarts, making it the more elastic leg. Operators running arbitrage or basis trades need both maintenance calendars on the desk, not just one.
